Admission Criteria

The following two criteria are required to apply to the sonography program.  To apply you can be in the process of completing both criteria, but they must be completed prior to starting the sonography program.

Criteria 1:  Associate degree or higher in one of the healthcare programs listed below

  • Diagnostic Medical Sonographer
  • Registered Nurse: RN or ADN
  • Radiologic Technologist
  • Respiratory Therapist
  • Physical Therapist/Physical Therapist Assistant
  • Occupational Therapist/Occupational Therapist Assistant
  • Exercise Physiologist (if working in a hospital with direct patient care such as cardiac rehab or ekg)
  • Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse
  • Employer & Clinical Site Exception Policy (*Degree requirement can be waived. More information on sonography website)

Criteria 2:  Completion of Required Sonography Prerequisites

Basic medical science and interpersonal communication education is required as a foundation for the clinical role of the diagnostic medical sonographer. All prerequisite courses must be at the post-secondary/college-level education courses completed with a letter grade of C or higher.

  • Communication (examples: English, composition, speech)
  • Human Anatomy & Physiology I & II (if combined, they must total at least 5 credit hours)
  • Mathematics (examples: contemporary college mathematics, intermediate algebra, college algebra, statistics, trigonometry)
  • Physics (examples: radiologic physics, general physics)
  • Medical Terminology (if embedded in another course title, a course description must be provided to show that medical terminology was covered in the class)

Apply to the Sonography Program

Applications will be accepted beginning October 1, 2026-December 31, 2026. No applications are held over year to year and will not be returned to the applicant.

Please watch the instruction video, read all instructions included in the Sonography application form, and review the required application materials below. Once you begin filling out the online application, you will not be able to save your progress and return later.

The application deadline is December 31st.

NOTE: This is not an application to Washburn University. If you are not a current Washburn Student, you will need to separately apply to Washburn.

Selection Process

  1. A prospective applicant must meet the criteria laid out in the admissions criteria above
  2. A prospective applicant must be deemed eligible by the program director
  3. A prospective applicant's references, background check, and other application components must be deemed satisfactory by the program director and clinical coordinator
  4. There must be a signed affiliation agreement in place for the prospective applicant to ensure clinical placement

Employer & Clinical Site Exception Policy

The Employer & Clinical Site Exception Policy exists for a hospital to have the ability to request an employee go through the Washburn Sonography program.  This policy is for an employee who does not have one of the degrees listed above and this request must be made by the sonography department supervisor to the program director.

The applicant is still required to have direct patient care skills and routinely works with patients.  This policy is not for individuals who work as a secretary or are employed doing non-patient care work.  Common examples are CNA, CMA, EKG Tech, cardiac rehab, stress test technician, etc...


Application Deadline

December 31st is the deadline to be considered for the following fall class.
