The Inside Out Prison Exchange Program at Washburn

In the spring of 2020, we brought the Inside Out Prison Exchange Program, a nationally-known classroom model, to Washburn. This is a unique course, supported by the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and the University Honors Program, which is designed to take place at the Topeka Correctional Facility (TCF), with an equal number of Washburn students and inmates from the facility as enrolled students. As students, members of these two communities learned together, breaking down the barriers between them and gaining a greater understanding of our prison system. Thanks to the donations of many generous supporters, were were able to provide tuition for all of the incarcerated students who participated in the program. COVID-19 restrictions caused unexpected changes in the spring 2020 semester, but we plan to bring the Inside Out Prison Exchange Program back soon.
