Washburn Senior Academy

The Washburn Senior Academy provides academically high-achieving Shawnee County high school seniors the opportunity to earn nine hours of academic credit on the Washburn University campus during the second semester of their senior year.

About the Washburn Senior Academy

As part of the Senior Academy, you enroll in WU 101 (The Washburn Experience) and up to six addditional credit hours for a maximum of nine credit hours* at half the cost of our traditional student tuition rate.

You will have the opportunity to work with an academic advisor to complete a preliminary academic and career plan that begins your personalized path to academic success and graduation.

High school students with a cumulative high school GPA of 3.5 or higher are eligible to participate and must receive approval from their school counselor or principal. If you are younger than 18 years old, you will need to get approval of a parent or legal guardian to participate.

*All classes that students take through the Senior Academy occur on campus and are taught in-person.

Courses

You'll take three courses (9 total credit hours) on campus, including:

  • WU 101 – The Washburn Experience (M/W/F 8:00-8:50 a.m. or T/R 11:00 a.m.-12:15 p.m.)
  • Two general education elective courses – explore your course options

Cost

Courses taken as part of the Washburn Senior Academy are half the price of the traditional undergraduate tuition rate.

As a Washburn Senior Academy participant, you're strongly encouraged to join the Washburn University Honors Program. This program offers enriching courses, leadership opportunities, and a supportive community of motivated students. Since you're already earning college credits in high school, the Honors Program will keep you on track for academic success, with access to challenging classes and mentorship from faculty to help you grow and thrive in college.
