Richey Scholarship

Washburn's premier award, the Richey Scholarship is a $10,000 per year, renewable scholarship. The award can provide $40,000 toward your first undergraduate degree, and recipients can stack the scholarship on top of a Freshman Merit Scholarship. In addition, you receive automatic entry into Washburn's Honors Program and a guaranteed spot in the Honors Learning Community.

The University awards the Richey Scholarship to students who have achieved at the highest level academically and demonstrated the potential to contribute to the Washburn community. To receive this scholarship, you are required to live on campus within the Honors Learning Community during your first year as an Ichabod.

Application process

Who's eligible for the Richey Scholarship:

  • You must have a GPA of at least 3.9 and an ACT score of at least 28.
  • Recipients are required to attend the New Student Orientation on April 5, 2025.
  • You must have a completed FAFSA sent to Washburn University no later than Feb. 15, 2025.
  • Recipients are required to live on campus within the Honors Learning Community during their first year as an Ichabod. 

How to apply:

  • Application is invitation only. For high school seniors graduating in spring 2025, invitations will be mailed by Dec. 20, 2024.
  • Send a completed application packet to richeyscholars@washburn.edu.
Your application packet should include:
  1. A cover letter stating why you’re the best candidate for the Richey Scholars Program and why Washburn University is a good fit for you.
  2. A completed Richey Scholars Program Application.
  3. A completed application essay.
