Clinical Education

Students will complete didactic courses online and participate in clinical education at a Washburn Affiliated Radiation Therapy Center (clinical affiliate). Clinical placement is required for a student to begin the program. If a clinical site is not finalized by May 15th, the student will not be eligible to begin the program.

The Program welcomes interest from facilities that may wish to serve as clinical training sites. Facilities interested in affiliating should review the resources below to learn about the program and determine whether their site meets the requirements for clinical affiliation.

Clinical Affiliate Information Packet (PDF) – Provides an overview of the program.

Clinical Affiliate Questionnaire – Completed by the facility to provide details about equipment, patient volume, staffing, and available clinical learning experiences.

Clinical consists of unpaid experience. In the fall and spring semesters clinical hours are

  • Tuesday-Thursday (8am-4pm)
  • Friday (8am-12pm)

The winter intersession, a component of the spring semester, consists of approximately three weeks in December and January in which student’s complete clinical hours:

  • Monday-Friday (8am-4pm)

In the summer semester, clinical hours are scheduled:

  • Monday-Thursday (8am-4pm)
  • Friday (8am-12pm)

NOTE: Some didactic courses include a clinical experience as part of a project, report or presentation. To fulfill these experiences students may have to alter their clinical hours slightly.

Is there a Dietician on site or available to patients?
Is there a Social Worker on site or available to patients?
Section 4: Dosimetry Coverage & Student Dosimetry Rotation
Students are required to complete a brief dosimetry rotation as part of their clinical education. Please help us understand your site's capacity to support this experience.
Is there a dosimetrist on site who could supervise a brief (2–4 week) student dosimetry rotation?
If no on-site dosimetrist is available, which of the following could your site support? (Check all that apply)
If "None of the above," please describe any other arrangements:
Section 5: Clinical Preceptor
Identify one (1) registered Radiation Therapist with a minimum of 2 years of work experience to serve as Clinical Preceptor. Section 6: Other Program Affiliations
Clinical Capacity: Per JRCERT standards, clinical capacity is one (1) student per linear accelerator. Affiliations with other radiation therapy programs are acceptable as long as the combined student load does not exceed this limit. This information helps us document and monitor clinical capacity appropriately.
Example: 2 linacs = maximum of 2 students at one time
Is your facility currently affiliated with any other Radiation Therapy educational program(s)?
If yes, please list the affiliated program(s)
Section 7: Equipment & Capabilities
Please describe the equipment in your department. Include manufacturer and model where applicable.

Minimum Requirement — 20 Patients Per Machine Per Day
Please report the average number of patients treated per machine per day across the year. For student training purposes, the program requires a minimum of 20 patients per machine per day to ensure students receive adequate patient exposure and develop the hands-on experience and muscle memory necessary to become competent entry-level radiation therapists.

Brachytherapy:
Note: If brachytherapy is not performed at your facility, the student may need to travel to an already-affiliated clinical site to complete this competency. Alternatively, this competency may be simulated through a lab exercise involving brachytherapy equipment, if available. The student should be aware that travel may be required.
Are there any planned updates or equipment changes in the near future?

Questions about the
Section 8: Student Clinical Experience & Educational Opportunities
The following questions help us assess how students can meet ARRT competency requirements at your site.
Staff Engagement
Question Yes No
Is the staff interested and willing to participate in the education of a radiation therapy student?
Does the staff understand that students will gain repeated hands-on experience in the following rotations: clerical/front desk, nursing, treatment room, simulation, brachytherapy, dosimetry, and quality control?
Does administration and staff understand that students are not to be used as staff, are not considered when making staffing decisions, and that clinical education hours are unpaid?
Competency & Experience Opportunities
After reviewing ARRT requirements in the affiliate information packets, could the student gain repeated hands-on experience with the various ARRT-defined procedures?
Note:
If physical block cutting is not performed at your facility, this competency may be satisfied by student participation in the custom block process, including MLC-based field shaping, electron cutout design, or third-party block ordering workflows.
Could a student gain block cutting experience (photon or electron) at your facility?
Could a student participate in chart rounds?
Could a student participate in quality control testing of equipment (linear accelerator and CT simulator)?
Does your site treat pediatric patients?
Note: If physical block cutting is not performed at your facility, this competency may be satisfied by student participation in the custom block process, including MLC-based field shaping, electron cutout design, or third-party block ordering workflows.
Radiation Monitoring
Clinical sites provide a radiation detection device to each student per the affiliation agreement. Students review the device report at the clinical site in alignment with the collection interval.
How often does your site collect radiation detection badges?
Can Students be granted online access to their reports?
Typically, the RSO can request online access to the manufacturer and would make reporting easier.
Satellite & Off-Site Locations
Important: JRCERT accreditation standards require that every physical location where a student provides clinical care must be individually affiliated with the program. This means each site — even satellite offices or locations within the same health system — must complete the full affiliation process and be approved before a student may rotate there. Additionally, the program pays an affiliation fee for each clinical site, which requires budget approval. Because this is an accelerated program, we strongly prefer to keep students at a single location whenever possible. If your site would require a student to rotate to an additional facility, please contact the Clinical Education Coordinator to discuss before proceeding.
Would a student need to rotate to any additional locations (e.g., satellite offices, off-site clinics)?
Please list facility name, address, and phone for each location:
