Scholarships for math and statstics students
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Washburn University offers a limited number of competitive, merit-based scholarships for qualified students majoring in a mathematics and statistics department degree program. We offer degree tracks in mathematics, mathematics for secondary education, actuarial science and applied statistics. Students majoring in elementary education with an emphasis in middle school math and students with a declared minor in mathematics may also apply for scholarships from the department.Eligibility & requirements
Scholarship recipients will be selected from those applicants who satisfy the criteria listed below.
- A declared major in mathematics, mathematics for secondary education, actuarial science or applied statistics, or a declared minor in mathematics, or a major in elementary education with a declared emphasis in middle school math;
- A grade point average of at least 3.0 overall and at least 2.75 in selected mathematics courses taken at Washburn;
- Making adequate progress towards earning a mathematics and statistics department degree (e.g., Must take at least one class required for the degree each semester, must pass at least 12 hours per semester.)
Then, during the academic year the funds are awarded, scholarship recipients are expected be enrolled full-time at Washburn (at least 12 hours per semester). Scholarship recipients will receive half of their scholarship award during the fall semester at Washburn, with the remainder awarded at the beginning of the spring semester. Award amounts will depend on the student's grades in mathematics courses, their academic standing (freshman, sophomore, junior or senior), and the level of their involvement in mathematics department activities (Math Club, tutoring, etc.).
All students must submit a scholarship application in order to be considered for scholarship funds, even if you have received a scholarship previously.
Incoming students, transfer students and students who have not received a math scholarship before
If you haven't received a scholarship from the Washburn Department of Mathematics and Statistics before, you should fill out the new scholarship application. Applications from current Washburn students are due by 5:00 p.m. on February 15 in order to be considered for the next academic year. Students who have recently declared a mathematics and statistics major may apply for funding for the current academic year, but awards will depend on availability of funds. Applications for incoming first year students and transfer students have a priority deadline of March 31, but will be considered on a rolling basis. If you've received a scholarship from the Washburn Department of Mathematics and Statistics before you should fill out one of the applications linked below. Applications from current Washburn students are due by 5:00 p.m. on February 15 in order to be considered for the next academic year. Elementary education majors with an emphasis in middle school math should complete the elem. ed. scholarship application linked below. If you have not received a scholarship from the department before, please fill out the new scholarship application instead.
