Join the University Marching Band

Elevate your college experience with Washburn University's marching band – a community that goes beyond music. Regardless of your major or academic year, our band is an inclusive family fostering collaboration, leadership and memorable experiences.

You'll perform a variety of music for all Ichabod home football games, homecoming tailgates and exhibition performances. Joining the marching band not only hones your musical skills but also ensures a sense of belonging within our dynamic campus culture. What's even more exciting? All marching band students receive a scholarship, making this musical adventure both enriching and rewarding.

Who can join the marching band?

Students from all majors and academic years can participate. The band consists of wind instrumentalists, marching percussionists and color guard. No audition required.

What are the requirements?

  • Attend marching band camp in the summer
  • Enroll in Marching Band (MU 145/345) in the fall
  • Attend all rehearsals (4 - 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays) and performances

How do I join?

Incoming freshmen or transfer students should contact music.theatre@washburn.edu about their interest in the band. Continuing Washburn students should enroll in Marching Band (MU 145/345) in the fall semester.

All marching band members receive a scholarship!

Scholarships range from $500 and $1,200 per semester depending on your role in the band. No audition required.

Anya Pogorelova is the Interim Director of Bands at Washburn University where she teaches courses in music education, conducting, and directs the Marching Ichabods, University Band, and the Washburn Wind Ensemble. As a passionate advocate for access to music education for all, Anya is the founder of the Topeka New Horizons Band and previously served as the assistant director of the Roeland Park New Horizons Band.
