Historical Film Nights presents an offering for our WUmester theme of Community and Belonging - Barbarosa (1982). 'The Outlaw. 'The Outcast...and the Legend that was bigger than both of them.
When we think of community and belonging, we often begin with family. But how does that change when your family is trying to kill you? That is the plight shared by both the outlaw Barbarosa (played by county-music legend Willie Nelson) and his accidental sidekick Karl (Gary Busey) in Fred Schepisi's Barbarosa. Meanwhile, on the film-making side: how does an Australian making his American film debut choose to make his mark in the Hollywood community? By choosing for his first project that most American of genres, a Western: a picaresque tale of the mythic west set in the arid Texas borderlands. That proved to be a problematic choice, but the result, this cult classic, still delights.

Everyone is invited to Jericho M. Hockett's (she/her) first book of poetry reading and release party! Jericho will read from In the Bodies (Unsolicited Press).
In the Bodies is a collection of poetry for shapeshifting. The poems investigate possibilities of mutual transformation, as our relational encounters with others co-create meaning, poetry, environment, and even our bodies. What might we co-create when we press against the taught borders of body, of place, of time, of what is accepted as possible and holy? These poems press, inviting readers to get in the bodies of other creatures, people, and places- to taste what melts their tongues, feel their bone breaks, cry through their eyes, sense the world rotating through their dirt and updrafts, shift shape, and maybe sprout new growth together in shared gardens.
Jericho M. Hockett's roots are in the Southwest Kansas farm, while she blooms in Topeka with her family. She is a poet, social psychologist, teacher, forever student, and dreamer, most whole in the green. Some of her poems appear in or are forthcoming from Drunk Monkeys, Earth's Daughters, Yellow Arrow Journal, Coffin Bell, and Pilgrimage Magazine. Her shapbook "Rituals for Dissolution" is forthcoming (Eastern Iowa Review/Port Yonder Press). More works are always brewing. Instagram: @jerichomariette

Historical Film Nights presents an offering for our WUmester theme of "Community and Belonging".
The theme of "community and belonging" plays out in an interestingly double-edged way in George C. Wolfe's biopic about the civil-rights leader. On the one hand, Bayard Rustin is the key figure in pulling together the March on Washington in 1963, and getting Martin Luther King, Jr., onto that Lincoln Memorial-backed stage to deliver his "I have a dream" speech. The work required stitching together an alliance among diverse, often competing, Black civil-rights organizations to create a unified movement. On the other hand, as a gay man in an era in which no one was yet talking about rights for homosexuals, Rustin is an outlier even within the movement he creates. Rustin explores the interplay between these two themes in Rustin's life.
As students are preparing for spring piano recitals and competitions, Washburn Piano Day provides piano students grades K-12 an opportunity to try out repertoire in a semi-public performance setting and receive valuable feedback from Washburn University piano faculty and music major judges. A performance schedule will be emailed to participants a few days before the date of the festival.
Register today! Deadline 2/18/2024

Our speaker for 2024 is Professor Robert B. Talisse from Vanderbilt University. The title of his lecture will be "The Civic Value of Solitude."
"This is what democracy looks like" is typically the caption to a photo of engaged citizens publicly assembled to express a common political sentiment. Democracy indeed needs an active citizenry. However, democracy also needs citizens to be reflective. The trouble is that common modes of collective democratic actiion can dismantle our reflective capacities by escalating polarization and partisan animosity. It turns out that there are certain civic virtures that can be cultivated and exercised only in solitude.
Free and open to the public.

Math Day is a Washburn tradition dating back to 1969. On a Tuesday in November each year, high school students from all over northeast Kansas come to Washburn to compete in a 40-question competitive mathematics exam. Teachers accompanying the students have a discussion of current issues of importance to mathematics educators and/or participate in activities ready for the mathematics classroom.
After lunch is served, students from each school work as a team to try to win the "Mathnificent Race". This competition, introduced at the 2013 Math Day, includes a scavenger hunt on the Washburn campus for information required to solve a sequence of problems as quickly as possible. The first team to finish wins a plaque, but every team that completes all of the problems correctly wins a small prize.
In the afternoon, there is an awards ceremony honoring the students' achievements. The top three individual scorers in the senior and non-senior categories all receive medals, and the top three scorers from each school receive ribbons. Plaques are awarded to top teams and to the top overall scorer. To add to the fun, there are also door prize drawings for both the students and the teachers, with mathematically-oriented prizes.

It is the practice of Washburn University to respect the privacy of all Web site visitors to the extent permitted by law. This Web privacy statement is intended to inform you of the ways in which this Web site collects information, how the information is used and what we do to protect any information you choose to provide us.
There are four types of information that may be collected during your visit: network traffic information, Web server statistic logs, cookies, and information voluntarily provided by you.
Network Traffic
In the course of ensuring network security and consistent service for all users, the University may use software programs to do such things as:

- Monitor and maintain the performance of the University network
In the course of such monitoring, these programs may detect such information as e-mail headers, addresses from network packets and other information. Information from these activities is used solely for the purpose of maintaining the security and performance of the University's networks and computer systems. Personally identifiable information from these activities is not released to external parties unless required by law.

- Domain name and IP address from which the access occurred
- Version of browser used and the capabilities of the browser

The University makes no attempt to identify individual visitors from this information: any personally identifiable information is not released to external parties unless required by law.
Cookies
Cookies are small bits of data stored on your hard drive on behalf of a Web site and returned to the Web site on request. This site may use cookies for two purposes: to carry data about your current session at the site from one Web page to the next, and to identify you to the site between visits. If you prefer not to receive cookies, you may turn them off in your browser, or may set your browser to ask you before accepting a new cookie. Some pages may not function properly if the cookies are turned off. Unless otherwise notified on this site, we will not store data, other than for these two purposes, in cookies. Cookies remain on your computer. We do not forward them to any external parties.
