Cultivating connections and fresh produce: The vibrant Washburn University community garden

Founded in 2009 by dedicated LinC Bonner Scholars, the Washburn University Community Garden stands as a vibrant testament to the power of collaboration, sustainability, and community engagement at Washburn. Nestled within the heart of our campus between the Living Learning Center (LLC) and West Hall, this lush oasis has blossomed into a haven where students, faculty and community members come together to cultivate not only fresh produce but also lasting connections.

Our mission: cultivating growth, nurturing community

At the Washburn University Community Garden, our mission is rooted in fostering growth – both in the form of nutritious produce and the sense of unity that flourishes within our garden's bounds. Guided by principles of sustainability and environmental stewardship, we strive to provide a hands-on learning environment that empowers individuals with the knowledge and skills to lead more sustainable lives while also addressing food security on campus.

How can I get involved?

  • Gardening and watering: Our garden is organized communally meaning we share all the plots to grow produce for our community instead of having individual plots. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just getting started, you can pitch in and help us grow. We have regular meetings where we collectively decide how to organize ourselves, what to plant, etc.
  • Hungry? The items grown in the community garden are freely available to members of the Washburn University community. We send out emails to our volunteer list and post to our Teams site when items are ready to harvest. About once a week during the growing season, we collect produce and donate it to Bods Feeding Bods on campus where anyone can pick it up.
  • Volunteer opportunities: Embrace the joy of giving back by volunteering in the garden. Our collaborative projects create lasting memories while contributing to a healthier environment. We especially are always looking for folks willing to weed, water, and help with the upkeep of the garden. If you’re interested in joining our Teams site or email list, send us an email at communitygarden@washburn.edu.
  • Community events: From seasonal harvest celebrations to educational workshops, our garden hosts a variety of events that celebrate nature, culture, and community.
  • Research initiatives: Partner with us on research projects that explore innovative ways to enhance sustainability and food security, contributing to a better world for all. Faculty and Staff involved with the garden are able to help sponsor WTEs and Independent Research projects. Send us an email at communitygarden@washburn.edu to learn more!
