Register your bicycle on campus

Washburn University students can now benefit from a new partnership between the Washburn University Police Department and Bike Index, a web-based platform that allows you to register your bike using your smartphone or computer. In the event your bike is lost or stolen, the Bike Index community and the Washburn University Police Department will collaborate to help you retrieve it. So far, Bike Index has successfully recovered more than 4,300 stolen bikes.

What to do

There are several techniques you can use to help prevent your or your student's bike from being stolen.

  1. Always use a high-quality U-lock. Never use only a cable lock - these can easily be cut through with cable-cutters or a saw.
  2. Lock frame and one wheel to fixed object. (See Example). If you need a lock contact WUPD at 785-670-1300.
  3. When possible, use a secondary lock to secure second tire to bicycle rack
  4. Secure bicycle to approved racks only.
  5. Record bicycle details (Serial # and Model #). Register your bicycle with WUPD.
  6. Take photos of your bicycle when you purchase it.
  7. Check on your bicycle daily.
  8. Do NOT leave your bicycle unsecured for any period of time.
