If you are wanting to create a faculty-led study abroad program, need assistance in working with WU international students, applying to the international travel fund, or exploring our semi-annual Accent newsletter see below. We appreciate your support of the international community, and fostering an international perspective.

Faculty-Led Study Abroad

The Study Abroad Office (SAO) welcomes Washburn's faculty to develop and lead study abroad programs. To learn more about taking your classroom global please contact us at studyabroad@washburn.edu.

Program Proposal and Deadlines

The Faculty-led Study Abroad Program Proposal is required for all new and repeat programs. The proposal is completed and submitted through Dynamic Forms. Click on the "Additional Forms & Info" tab to access the proposal and supporting documents.

Faculty-led Program Proposals are due the academic year prior to provide ample time for review and approval by all parties, recruitment of students, and completion of all third-party payment requirements. The deadlines are based on the term the course credit is awarded.

Proposal deadline by program/course term:

  • Spring semester: May 1 of the prior year
  • Summer semester: May 1 of the prior year
  • Fall semester: November 1 of the prior year
  • Winter break: November 1 of the prior year

Every year faculty develop and lead programs around the globe facilitating transformational learning experiences for Washburn students. These high impact programs take time and effort to develop and execute. The Study Abroad Office provides resources to assist you in the process.

Meet with Us

New Programs: Schedule two meetings:

  1. Meet with the Study Abroad Coordinator, studyabroad@washburn.edu, to review the process for developing and leading a program.
  2. Meet with the Study Abroad Faculty-led Program Fellow, bob.beatty@washburn.edu, for resources and assistance in developing your program.

Repeat Programs: Schedule one meeting with the Study Abroad Coordinator studyabroad@washburn.edu, to review any updates to the program.

Study Abroad Faculty Workshops

Register for Workshops through Center for Teaching Excellence and Learning C-TEL

"International Opportunities for Faculty" - Are you interested in bringing the world to your classroom? This workshop will highlight international resources available to WU Faculty such as an International Sweet Sabbatical, Magellan Faculty Exchange, and funding available for scholarly /creative presentations and uncompensated teaching through the International Travel Fund. Faculty will share how they incorporate their international experience into curriculum development and International Programs Staff will share the process of applying and navigating the logistics on and off campus.

"Program Development" - Are you interested in developing a faculty-led program, but not sure how to get started? Then this workshop is for you! Bring your ideas and questions. A copy of the Study Abroad Program Development Guide and Program Proposal will be provided, along with additional instructions for completing the proposal process. First time program leaders and assistants are encouraged to attend.

Resources for Working with International Students

International Travel Fund

The fund is available only to full-time faculty members on tenure track and librarians with faculty status. This fund is available only to support travel abroad for presenting scholarly and creative work and invited unpaid teaching/conducting master classes/seminars/workshops. Mere attendance at a conference does not qualify for funding.
