Can Emporia: WSGA's annual food drive
Can Emporia is an annual food drive competition between Washburn University and Emporia State University leading up to the Turnpike Tussle football game on Saturday, November 8. It's not just about school pride—it's about supporting our community. All donations go to local food pantries, including Bods Feeding Bods, to help combat food insecurity in Topeka.
This year, the donation window runs from September 8 to November 3, and contributions made between September 26 and October 21 will also count toward Washburn's Homecoming Grand Champion competition.
How to donate and get involved
Donating is easy! Drop off canned goods at:
- Bods Feeding Bods
- Kuehne Hall, Room 101
- Hours listed on the Bods Feeding Bods webpage
- Student Government Office
- Located in the Memorial Union Underground
- M/W/F: 8 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
- T/Th: 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
What's at stake?
The winning school will be announced during halftime of the Nov. 8 Turnpike Tussle game, and the ultimate prize? The Student Body President and Vice President of the losing school will be pied in the face by the winning school's leaders. 🎉🥧

- Cans of up to 16.5oz. count as 1
- 16.6 to 32.5oz = 2 Cans
- 32.6 to 48.5 oz = 3 Cans and so on.
- Increment by 1 Can for an addition of approx.. 15.9 oz
- $1 = 2 Can (online donation site will be available)
- Ramen Noodle Packs = ¼ Can (4 Packages = 1 Can)
- Single-serve cups/bowls/bags
- Kraft Singles, Rice A Roni cups, tuna salad and such = ¼ Can
- (4 cups/bowls/bags = 1 Can)
- A Box of Macaroni & Cheese and such = 1 Can
- Jarred Items (Peanut Butter, Mayo, Condiments, Pickles, Etc.)
- Up to 16.5 oz = 2 Cans
- 16.6 to 32.5 oz = 3 Cans
- 32.6 to 48.5 oz = 4 Cans and so on.
- Box of Cereal
- Standard Size = 2 Cans
- Family Size = 3 Cans
- Rice
- Up to 32 oz = 1 Can
- 32.5 to 64 oz = 2 Cans
- Box/Bag of Instant Potatoes = 1 Can
- Hygiene/Toiletry Items
- Toothpaste - up to 1oz. = ½ Can; over 1 oz. = 1 Can
- Toothbrush = ½ Can
- Face/Body Wipes – regular pack Up to 50 wipes = 1 Can
- 51 to 100 wipes = 2 Cans and so on.
- Bar of soap = 1 can
- Liquid items (Soap, Bodywash, Lotion, etc.) – 4 to 20 oz = 1 Can
- Travel size (up to 3.5oz.) = ½ can; over 20 oz = 2 Cans
- Feminine Hygiene Items
- up to 20 ct. = 2 Cans
- 21 to 40 ct. = 3 Cans
- 41 to 60 ct. = 4 Cans and so on.
- 1 Notebook/Three-Ring Binder = ½ Can and so on.
- Pack of Pens/Pencils/Highlighters
- Up to 5 ct. = 1 Can
- 6 to 10 ct. = 2 Cans
- 11 to 15 = 3 Cans and so on.
- 1 Roll of Paper Towels/Toilet Paper = ½ Can and so on.
